Washington State Judge Declares Mistrial in Court-Martial of Officer Who Refused Deployment to Iraq

The court-martial of US Army Lt. Ehren Watada has ended in a mistrial. The judge rejected the ‘stipulation of fact’ signed by Watada. The judge declared that although Watada admitted refusing to fight in Iraq, he did not understand his statement amounted to a confession to elements of the charges of missing a troop movement and conduct unbecoming an officer..

The judge has set a trial date for a new court-martial in March.
